Gregory Annenberg Weingarten and the Annenberg Foundation’s GRoW @ Annenberg™ is partnering with the Institut Curie on a five-year grant to create a laboratory for translational research in pediatric oncology.
Grant funds will be used to support the creation of a laboratory of translational research in pediatric oncology at the institute, including providing salary support for an oncology specialist. The lab will work to find a cure for neuroblastoma, one of the most common forms of childhood cancer, by identifying new drugs that target the tumor cells. The lab will build on the more than 25 years of research by the Department of Pediatric Oncology to develop precise diagnostic criteria of childhood solid tumors. This research has led to treatment strategies adapted to specific genomic profiles for certain types of neuroblastoma, and this treatment protocol will be financed by this laboratory.
Beginning in September 2011, Dr. Gudrun Schleiermacher, a pediatric oncologist and Ph.D., will work under the direction of Dr. Michon to lead the laboratory’s research.
On September 13, 2011, a ceremony was held at the Cercle de l’Union Interallié to honor Gregory and Regina Weingarten, under the patronage of French Health Minister Xavier Bertrand. Pictures from the event are below.
